UAP Research Update: What the Science, Congress, and New Disclosure Portals Are Telling Us (2024–2026)

Something has shifted in the UAP landscape — and it has shifted fast. Between 2024 and mid-2026, the conversation moved from fringe speculation into peer-reviewed journals, congressional hearing rooms, and a new federal disclosure portal. Here is what the evidence trail looks like right now, and what it means for serious researchers.

The Science Is Catching Up

In early 2025, a landmark paper appeared in Progress in Aerospace Sciences. Lead author Professor Kevin Knuth, joined by 33 international scientists, synthesized more than 20 historical government studies and proposed rigorous, data-driven methodologies for UAP investigation. The paper's framing is deliberately plain: treat UAP as a physics problem.

A separate 2025 study analyzed empirical signatures — gravitational lensing effects and oscillatory motion — and modeled them against theoretical propulsion frameworks. The conclusion: some observed flight profiles are consistent with spatial warp propulsion of the Alcubierre-metric type. Whether this reflects real physics or data artifacts is still open. But the fact that this language now appears in peer-reviewed aerospace science marks a threshold.

Researchers at the University at Albany ran ground-truth field expeditions using infrared cameras, radiation detectors, and AI-assisted image analysis. Most observations resolved as conventional objects — including the International Space Station. A small but persistent percentage did not. The university team specifically flagged high-velocity bright white dots moving through dark cloud cover as remaining unresolved.

What AARO Has Been Doing

AARO's 2024 annual report resolved a substantial portion of its case backlog — attributing sightings to balloons, commercial drones, and Starlink satellite flaring. In late 2024, Oak Ridge National Laboratory completed materials testing on physical specimens described as crash debris. The lab found no anomalous composition: the materials were consistent with standard industrial aluminum alloys.

In August 2025, AARO partnered with Associated Universities, Inc. to run a workshop for 40 researchers. The focus: AI-assisted triage of approximately 1,600 historical and current reports. The methodology mirrors high-energy physics anomaly detection — using machine learning to flag statistical outliers while keeping human experts in the decision loop. The workshop produced recommendations for standardizing metadata (morphology, environmental context) across all reporting channels.

Congress Moves on Transparency

On the legislative side, two major bills advanced in parallel. The UAP Transparency Act was introduced in February 2025. The UAP Disclosure Act followed as an amendment to the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Both are structured around a national UAP Records Collection and an independent declassification review board — an approach modeled closely on the JFK Records Act.

PURSUE: The Federal Disclosure Portal

The most significant development of 2026 so far is PURSUE — the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, launched at WAR.GOV/UFO in May and June 2026. Hundreds of previously classified files are now publicly accessible. Among the early releases: the Northeastern Orb Sighting from July 2025, captured on video by law enforcement agents and showing luminous plasma-like spheres.

To filter the incoming data scientifically, Professor Avi Loeb — author of the controversial but widely read Extraterrestrial — has been appointed to lead a new UAP Science Advisory Council attached to the PURSUE system. Loeb's appointment signals a deliberate move toward credentialed, institutionally accountable oversight.

What to Watch Next

Several threads remain open and worth tracking closely:

  • PURSUE file releases — hundreds of files are queued; the most significant disclosures may still be ahead.

  • UAP Disclosure Act progress through the NDAA — whether the independent review board gets funded and staffed.

  • AARO AI triage outputs — the first public summary of the 1,600-case machine-learning analysis is expected before the end of 2026.

  • Avi Loeb's UAP Science Advisory Council — early methodological guidelines and any anomalous case referrals.

  • University at Albany field study follow-up — additional expeditions with expanded sensor arrays are planned.
